Mission
The Conservation Institute at the University of Applied Arts Vienna is an international teaching and research center for the preservation of art and cultural heritage. Our students and graduates work in or with museums, in monument preservation, in memorial sites, in research institutions, in religious contexts, together with engaged communities, and in public space.
Our driving force is the conviction that the preservation and critical contextualization of cultural heritage contribute to a vibrant culture of remembrance – and thus to respect for democracy, diversity and cultural values in the present and future. Cultural artifacts and objects of use are reliable witnesses of narrated and yet untold or unheard stories. Conservators give them a voice.
Methodologically, the study programmes are characterized by a combination of high scientific standards and maximum practical hands-on relevance. From the very beginning, the students work together with the lecturers on or in original objects. The study offerings in the institute’s studios and laboratories in Vienna are complemented by international project and research activities. A dense network of partners ensures timeliness, relevance, and constantly new challenges.
